1. Introduction
The Canary System needs to be licensed for commercial and professional use. This technical note describes the principal points to follow for a successful licensing.
The Canary System also needs to be licensed for a user to have access to additional functionalities. These functionalities include the Canary Historian, Axiom, Excel Add-In, API Connector, ODBC Connector, Trend Export Server and Trend Link.
Ensure that you have bought a license from a distributor before you start with the tutorial.
To license your Canary System, it is expected that you have the Canary Admin application installed and running on your computer.
There are 3 main steps that you need to follow to license your system:
- Launch the Canary Admin application
- Install the license manually
- Or install the license automatically
These steps are described in greater detail in the following sections.
2. Launch Canary Admin application

Once you have confirmed you have the correct serial number, you can continue as follows:
- Access the Canary Historian Server and launch the Canary Admin application. Select the “Licenses” panel.
2. Any licenses that you may already have on the system, will be displayed in the main window. To the right, there are two options available to a user for license activation. The top window is for manual activation, and the bottom window is for activation through the internet. Both will be discussed in more detail below.
3. Adding a license manually
If your PC that runs the Canary Admin tool has NO INTERNET ACCESS, you can still activate your license manually. All you need is another device that is connected to the internet.
- Copy the license code that is automatically provided to your system. This can be found at the top of the “Add License Manually” window in the Licenses panel.
2. Switching over to a device that has internet connection, navigate to the following URL: www.canarylabs.com/support/license
The page will look like this:
- Enter your “Full Name”, “Email” and “Company Name” fields based on the correct information.
- Enter the appropriate number of licenses in the “License Quantity” field
- Enter your S/N that you have received from your distributor in the “Serial Number” field.
- Enter the license code that you copied earlier in the “License Code” field
- Under “Select License Products”, select the desired products you would like to license. Generally, it would include “Canary Historian”, “Excel Add-In” and “Axiom”
- Click on the Submit button
3. You will be provided with a License Key. Cope this key and revert back to the License panel in the Canary Admin application. Enter this key into the “License Key” field. Click on the “Accept Key” button.
4. Your system will now be licensed.
4. Adding a license automatically
If your PC that runs the Canary Admin tool has INTERNET ACCESS, you can follow these steps:
- Navigate to the “Add License Through Internet” window in the Licenses panel.
- Enter your details in the “Name”, “Company” and “Email” fields based on the correct information.
- Enter your serial number in the “Serial Number” field
- Enter the appropriate number of licenses in the “Quantity” field
- Check the relevant boxes for the products your license includes
2. In the bottom right corner below the product options, click on the “Get License” button. This button will be activated once all the needed information has been entered correctly.
3. Your system will now be licensed.
5. Summary
All your active licenses will be displayed in the middle of the Licenses main page, and all information about the licenses can be found there. Information given includes the serial numbers, quantities, maximum tags and users, days left on license, etc.
